Carrie Coon and Finn Wolfhard in talks for Ghostbusters sequel

Actress Carrie Coon has been tapped to play the mother of Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard in the new Ghostbusters sequel.
Filmmaker Jason Reitman is working on a revamp of the beloved franchise, which will serve as a follow-up to his father Ivan’s Ghostbusters II from 1989, and will reportedly focus on a single mother and her family.
Now, according to Variety, Reitman has found his leads in Carrie and Finn, who have entered talks to front the movie.
Further details about the project have yet to be revealed, and it’s not yet known if original franchise stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson will appear in the forthcoming sequel.
Reitman, who is directing from a script he co-wrote with Gil Kenan, gave fans an early glimpse at his Ghostbusters 3 by debuting a teaser in January (19), which featured the fabled Ghostbusters car under a dust cover in a barn.
The movie news was announced less than three years after Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Kristen Wiig led Paul Feig’s all-female reboot, but it flopped with critics and fans of the 1980s movies, despite including appearances by Murray, Aykroyd, and Hudson.
Reitman’s version will not be connected in any way to Feig’s film, and the “insulting” revelation left Saturday Night Live star Jones fuming.
However, McCarthy recently weighed in on the controversy, and insisted she was fully supportive of Reitman’s vision.
“I’m for anybody who’s making movies,” she told Entertainment Tonight last month (Feb19). I talked to Jason about it, he’s just always had this idea, and his goes back to the world where the guys (from the original films) did exist and I’m like, ‘I want to see that.’ I’m all for it. I say like, ‘Tell the story.'”
She added, “I think there’s a million stories to be told. He’s a really, really good filmmaker and a really good storyteller, so I will be there buying my ticket. I’m all for it.”
Ghostbusters 3 will be a family affair for Jason as his dad Ivan, who directed the first two installments, will serve as a producer.
Production is due to begin this summer (19), ahead of a July, 2020 launch.
