Darren Star: ‘There’s still hope for a third Sex & the City movie’

Sex & The City creator Darren Star is refusing to give up hope for a third movie, despite Kim Cattrall’s decision not to return and Cynthia Nixon’s run for New York Governor.
Sarah Jessica Parker, the star of the beloved TV series and movie spin-offs, announced plans for a new film had stalled last year (17) due to Cattrall’s reluctance to reprise her character for a third movie.
The big reveal upset Cattrall, who insisted she had always made it clear the first Sex & the City sequel would be the last time she would play Samantha Jones.
The spat rumbled into 2018 as fans of the series and films urged producer Parker to either kill off Kim’s character or replace her.
Parker previously admitted she was interested in making the film without her former castmate, and it appears Star is on board, telling Entertainment Tonight, “I loved the series and those first two movies.”
He insists that replacing Cattrall would not be the biggest hurdle to overcome if there was to be another film – but finding time for Nixon to shoot if she becomes New York’s new Governor would be a challenge.
“Let’s see when she becomes Governor, we can talk about how all that will work,” Star said. “You know, don’t Governors get hiatuses or something…? Sort of take a break from governing the great state of New York and do a movie? You never know!”
But Star admits he has yet to seriously start thinking about whether to kill off Kim Cattrall’s character or recast the role: “It’s nothing I’ve thought about right now seriously,” he tells the news show.
The Sex & the City TV series ended in 2004 and the first film was released four years later in 2008. The sequel hit cinemas in 2010.
Parker previously told ET she was upset there would be no third film, stating, “I struggle with it because it’s a bit sad, but I think one must keep these things in perspective – I have a lot of incredible memories, singular memories, that are shared among those four women, and I’m incredibly grateful for the experience.”
