Liv Tyler directs short film for Gap campaign

Liv Tyler has made her directorial debut on a short film for American retailer Gap’s new campaign about motherhood.
The Mama Said project, which features The Lord of the Rings actress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, models Coco Rocha and Candice Swanepoel, and artist Ali Bird, was made to support the Every Mother Counts charity, which works to make pregnancy and childbirth safer all over the world.
“I often think of the things my grandmother and my mother have been telling me my whole life,” Tyler, who is mum to two sons and a daughter, says. “Remembering what your mama said as a child and growing up is very important. I often try to think of things that I can say to my children in a way that they can hear me the same way I heard my mom.”
Smollett-Bell also sings the film’s theme, a rendition of the Bellamy Brothers’ Let Your Love Flow, and it features the stars sharing candid moments with their children – all dressed in Gap clothing.
“When I think of Mama Said, I think of things my mama used to say to me,” Bell, who has a son, says. “My mom used to try to reinforce the fact that it is important to live your truth and be authentic and don’t apologise for who you are. I look forward to passing that to my son.”
“I’ve always loved the Gap,” Tyler adds. “Growing up in America, Gap is such a big part of your life and I thought it was such a special thing to do a project that involves the mothers, the children and Every Mother Counts.”
