The Little Mermaid TV musical in the works

Classic Disney tale The Little Mermaid is getting the live-action treatment for TV.
The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live! will air on American network ABC on 3 October (17).
Casting will be announced in the near future, but the “celebrity artists” will perform Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s songs from the 1989 animated film.
The TV special will be a first for the network, following the successes of live TV musical versions of Peter Pan, The Sound of Music, The Wiz, and Hairspray on rival channel NBC.
Bosses at Done + Dusted are producing the TV special, while Hamish Hamilton, Ian Stewart, David Jammy, Katy Mullan and Richard Kraft of Kraft-Engel Productions are executive producing.
The TV musical is not the only The Little Mermaid project in the works – Hamilton creator and former star Lin-Manuel Miranda is producing a live action movie for Disney. He is also writing new music alongside Menken for the project.
A second live action The Little Mermaid film is also in the works, based on the original tale by Hans Christian Andersen. Love Actually writer/director Richard Curtis has been confirmed as the screenwriter, with Rebecca Thomas attached to direct.
Chloe Grace Moretz was lined up for the lead role, but the 20-year-old dropped out in September (16) as part of a self-imposed Hollywood hiatus.
“I pulled the plug on all my movies because I want to reassess who I am and find myself within my roles again. I’m realising that I can slow down,” she said at the time.
