Captain America: Civil War claims victory in North American box office

Captain America: Civil War is waving the victory flag atop the North American box office with a mighty $181.8 million (£126 million) haul.
The Disney blockbuster, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), garnered rave reviews and debuted with the biggest figures of the year (16) to date, and the fifth best North American opening of all time.
The action epic, which features Chris Evans as the titular superhero, Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, among many others, is also the highest-grossing instalment of the Captain America franchise so far, easily surpassing the $95 million (£66 million) taken by Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014 and the $65.1 million (£45.1 million) earned by Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011.
Captain America: Civil War, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, opened overseas at the end of April (16) and now boasts a worldwide haul of $678 million (£470 million) after just 12 days on release.
It easily triumphed over its closest competitor, Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book, which is a distant second with $21.9 million (£15.2 million) after reigning the chart for the past three weeks.
Garry Marshall’s star-studded romantic comedy Mother’s Day received a welcome boost as Americans celebrated the holiday on Sunday (08May16), earning $9 million (£6.2 million) to grab the number three spot in its second week on release.
The Huntsman: Winter’s War and cat comedy Keanu round out the new top five.
