‘DC League of Super-Pets’ Review: A Justice League Adventure With Heart

The DC Universe never comes to play with its movies. These superheroes save the day and move on with their lives, either undercover or out in the open. What about the other people in their lives, though, or the other animals? DC League of Super-Pets fights that theory of solely serious comic book characters and flips it on its head with some cute pets and hilarious mayhem.

‘DC League of Super-Pets’ welcomes a new team of fun heroes

We all know the members of the Justice League: Superman (John Krasinski), Batman (Keanu Reeves), Wonder Woman (Jeemela Jill), Green Lantern (Dascha Polanco), Cyborg (Daveed Digs), Aquaman (Jemaine Clement), and the Flash (John Early). Now, some rag-tag group must join the fight to save the world and find the members of the Justice League when they are kidnapped, and this team is filled with animals (i.e. Krypto the Super Dog, a boxer, a potbellied pig, a turtle, and a red squirrel).

Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart team up once again

Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart’s friendship has spanned many years and movies. There’s Central IntelligenceJumanji, and even a fun little cameo in Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw. Audiences get to witness a masterful dynamic between the two: Dwayne Johnson is strong and a bit too prideful, while Kevin Hart takes on the comedic and sometimes weaker of the bunch. Both personalities may joke and get on each other’s nerves, but the two characters always have each other’s backs.

Basically, this film is no different. Dwayne plays Superman’s best friend and iconic super dog Krypto who has a lot of trouble socializing with other dogs because of his domineering nature. Kevin Hart portrays a boxer hound named Ace, who is sarcastic and a little rough around the edges. Although the 2 may not get off on the same foot initially, their friendship grows.

Certainly, you can pick out Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart’s voices, especially when they interact with each other. I think that’s what makes the movie work, though. The chemistry is there, even in an animated film.

The animals and voice actors are a match made in heaven

When casting voice actors, it’s always a gamble. Will they match the character they’re voicing? Do their voices stand out too much to be believable playing someone else? For DC League of Super-Pets, the animal cast just makes sense.

Familiar voices from Narcos and Russian Doll

First, we have Diego Luna as an anxious squirrel Chip. The Star Wars and Narcos actor has a knack for playing an apprehensive character who is given the power of electrokinesis. He’s riddled with fear, continuing to hold back thinking of all the problems that could arise. I totally get you, Chip.

Then there’s Russian Doll leading lady Natasha Lyonne who takes on the role of Merton the turtle, ironically graced with super speed. Not only are the turtle’s movements slow, but so is Natasha’s speaking. While her voice is distinct and familiar, her ability to commit to the bit is astounding. Cue her falling madly in love with every construction helmet and stuffed animal she sees because her eyesight convinces her it’s another turtle.

Yep, that’s the voice of an SNL star

SNL star Vanessa Bayer voices the cute but insecure pig PB. With her good intentions and sometimes far-fetched execution, PB rambles and rambles when she can’t find the right words or the right superhero name. Vanessa plays her with a mixture of sweetness and timidness. She just wants to be cuddled, even with her powers that let her change size.

Now, I can’t forget SNL superstar Kate McKinnon as the evil hairless guinea pig, Lulu. With Kate‘s maniacal laugh and menacing voice, she proves she is born to be a villain. Casting directors, please be on the lookout for Kate for more mad villain-type characters.

The silliness mixes with heartfelt moments

Overall, DC is all about out-of-this-world intense moments. Sure, this film has some fight scenes, but it’s far from Christian Bale’s Batman. While it connects to the DC superhero universe, it also pokes fun at it, especially with Batman always having to be serious and talk about his childhood trauma. You’re kind of ruining the mood, dude?

The film banks off its use of sarcasm that may go over children’s heads, but adults will definitely do a double-take and laugh. Simultaneously, we get some emotional times from Ace’s unfortunate backstory, Krypto fearing the loss of his best friend forever, and the worry that no one will want to adopt Ace, PB, and Merton.

Friendship above all

Even with all the chaos, kick-butt action scenes, and comedy, DC League of Super-Pets illustrates the importance of friendship. One can be the most powerful being in the world, but without a friend, they don’t have much.
