UPDATE: According to Entertainment Weekly, Gosling will not be taking part in Disney’s The Lone Ranger. Back to the drawing board. I say give Jim Caviezel a chance…
EARLIER: Disney’s really going for the jugular with their in-the-works Lone Ranger flick. They’ve got their Tonto in Johnny Depp and now they’re looking to land Ryan Gosling as the Lone Ranger. The actor is reportedly in talks for the the role.
Yes, they’re both talented actors — we know this. To be honest, that can’t be the sole reason Disney is looking to pair them. Simply put, if you combined those two actors’ fan bases, you’d have a sizable audience already — and that’s before you even factor in people who love The Lone Ranger. The TV show that ran from 1949 to 1957 followed the masked Lone Ranger, a lawman assisted by his Native American companion Tonto in his ongoing quest to fight injustice. Nabbing Gosling is a good move for Disney, if they can swing it.
Gosling’s production schedule is the problem here. He’s set to star in Logan’s Run which begins production this fall and it’s possible that the schedule will conflict with Ranger and prevent him from saddling up for the role. If, however, he manages to make it work this would be a shift for Gosling. The Lone Ranger is a huge project, bringing the original Pirates of The Caribbean team back together with Gore Verbinski directing and Jerry Bruckheimer producing.
