War for the Planet of the Apes swings into first place at the North American box office

The latest Planet of the Apes movie has swung past Spider-Man to take over at the top of the North American box office.
War For The Planet Of The Apes hauled in $56.5 million (GBP43 million) over its opening weekend to debut at number one at the box office on Sunday (16Jul17).
The take beats Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ opening in 2011, but falls $16 million (GBP12 million) short of the first weekend of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which was released in 2014.
Spider-Man: Homecoming, which debuted at the top last weekend (07-09Jul17) with a massive $117 million (GBP90.8 million) to become the third best opening at North American box office of the year, falls to two with an estimated $47.4 million (GBP36.2 million) and an over domestic gross of $208.3 million (GBP159 million).
That’s more than the film’s Spider-Man predecessor, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, made outright.
Despicable Me 3 comes in third with a $19.2 million (GBP14.7 million) weekend, while director Edgar Wright’s stylish Baby Driver and the acclaimed The Big Sick round out the top five.
And Wonder Woman is on course to overtake Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as the summer’s highest grossing film at six.
Patty Jenkins’ superheroine movie has now raked in $386.6 million (GBP295 million) since it debuted at the beginning of June (17) – that’s just $5.9 million (GBP4.5 million) shy of the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel’s haul.
The rest of the new top 10 is new teen thriller Wish Upon at seven, Cars 3 at eight, Transformers: The Last Knight at nine, and The House at 10.
