Holograms: An Unexpected Love Affair For Fall

If there’s one trend I was surprised to be so obsessed with this year, it had to be hologram anything. Surprised because I tend to stick with classic, muted accessories—animal print is the craziest I ever got. My closet is full of black and nude boots and ballet flats and the wildest accessory I own is my trusty Balenciaga Le Deux bag in bright cherry red. Everything else is black, black, and black. 

 

 

So when I first spotted the hologram clutches making the rounds during Fashion Week, I was conflicted. Sure, I loved the effect, but was it me? I resisted the urge to go out and buy my own iridescent envelope clutch, opting instead for a clear plastic version (clear is a neutral color, right?). 

 

But then holograms took an unexpected animalistic turn for the better. Suddenly, my favorite Little Mermaid-esque pieces were dripping in not only that changeable metallic color, they were now delightfully textured— channeling actual fish scales. 

 

 

While I’m not ready to wear full on head-to-toe Ariel, I am finding myself attracted to a piece here or there. Take for instance Figue’s textured white button up. My favorite shirt with a surprising twist looks amazing with skinny ripped jeans and simple ballet flats in any color. Or Tory Burch’s insane (is there any other word to describe these gems?) Mary-janes. Everyone in the office clamored around my desk when these showed up and even our designer, Stacey—who is far more monochromatic in her wardrobe than I am—was swooning. 

 

Here’s the pieces I just could not resist this season. A mini clutch to wear alone or tucked into my Chanel (black of course) and a hologram hat that is so cool, so weird, and so unbelievably awesome, I’m wearing it as often as I can.
