Andrew McMahon launches fundraiser to commemorate transplant anniversary

Former SOMETHING CORPORATE frontman ANDREW MCMAHON is celebrating the 10th anniversary of his life-saving stem-cell transplant by launching a fundraiser to help young adults with cancer.
The rocker was diagnosed with leukaemia in June, 2005 when he was just 22, but since it was detected early, he was able to receive a stem-cell transplant from his sister Katie McMahon that August, and subsequently went on to make a full recovery.
In the decade since, the Jack’s Mannequin singer has dedicated himself to supporting adolescents and young adults who are battling the disease, with his Dear Jack Foundation.
To celebrate his 10 years of being cancer free, McMahon has launched the Dear Jack 72K Challenge, urging fans to raise one dollar for the estimated 72,000 young people who will be diagnosed with cancer this year.
Announcing the fundraiser, McMahon says in a statement: “Ten years ago this August, I was transplanted with life-saving stem cells. When I first heard the words, ‘You have cancer,’ I never could have imagined what was to follow. The trajectory of a life is forever altered by those three loaded words. Unlike many friends I’ve met along the way, I survived to tell my story and use this new life to advocate for those who are hearing those difficult words for the first time.”
Since the campaign’s launch on 19 August (15), the challenge has raised more than $15,000 (£9,375), and will run until 31 December (15).
