Demi Lovato Now Identifies as Non-binary, Changes Pronouns to they/them

Hey, Hollywooders!

Very early Wednesday morning, pop star Demi Lovato posted a video on Instagram announcing that they now identify as non-binary and will be using the pronouns they/them moving forward.

“Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity and chance to be who we want and wish to be,” they said in the post caption. “I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you… you’ve seen the good, the bad, and everything in between. Not only has my life been a journey for myself,  I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras.”

We’ve all been lucky enough to get a glimpse of Demi Lovato through their docuseries on YouTube and through her latest album, Dancing With The Devil (see initial fan reactions here). We know about her struggles and admire her vulnerability, and can’t imagine how it has felt to remain in the spotlight throughout it all.

“Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all,” they go on to say. “I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward ?”

It was a journey for Demi Lovato to get to a space where they felt comfortable in their identity

“This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work. I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson,” they go on to say candidly in the post caption. “Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me. I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths and know I am sending so much love your way xox”

We are sending SO much love Demi’s way. It’s not easy to be vulnerable like this and we love that they are using their platform to encourage and inspire us all to keep living in our truths!

Shortly after adding a new feature allowing users to include their preferred pronouns in their profile, Instagram commented on Demi’s post, saying “❤️❤️❤️ proud of u ❤️❤️❤️.”

Instagram wasn’t the only one showering Demi Lovato with support.

For those who don’t know – what is non-binary?

According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, non-binary is one of the most common terms used to describe people whose gender is neither male nor female. It’s important to understand the meaning of non-binary, and how it differs from other identifications. The Center points out that there is a distinct difference between being non-binary, transgender, and intersex and the three should not be confused.

The organization advises others to be respectful of non-binary individuals by using the names and pronouns they ask you to use, trying not to make assumptions about one’s gender, and advocating for non-binary friendly policies. This could include gender-neutral dress codes and restrooms.
