Biography

The fiercely dedicated lead singer of the alternative rock band Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder's distinctive voice and delivery led the group to the heights of popularity during the rise of the "Grunge" movement in the early 1990s, which they subsequently weathered through sheer determination and a passionate fan base. Vedder helped form the Seattle-based band in 1990, which rocketed to the top of the charts the following year with their debut release, Ten (1991). Like Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, Vedder was soon minted as the voice of the alternative rock generation, a status he combated by ceaseless touring and recording. The band's work ethic helped them to overcome the inevitable crash of Grunge in the late 1990s, which saw their own sales drop significantly. But by the new millennium, Vedder and Pearl Jam had resurfaced with not only a sizable fan base, but also a thriving music career. Vedder began exploring solo projects in 2007 with the soundtrack to the film "In the Wild" before releasing his first proper studio release, Ukelele Songs, in 2011. Though public tastes and media coverage shifted away from Pearl Jam's brand of hard-driving, instrument-driven rock-n-roll, Pearl Jam and its leader, Eddie Vedder, remained among its most passionate purveyors.
