George Lopez: A Muy Macho Chihuahua

[IMG:L]Playing at a theater near you–George Lopez as Papi, the Chihuahua! I bet the comedian never thought he’d hear those words. But somehow Lopez as a proud Chihuahua, who falls for the persnickety and pampered Chihuahua Chloe (Drew Barrymore) in the box office champ Beverly Hills Chihuahua, makes sense. Here’s his take on it:

On his voice as Papi:
“I gave him a street edge. And when he was romantic, he was kinda like Antonio Banderas. Thank god he didn’t get asked to do Papi! You can’t compete, thank god they threw it to me.” [PAGEBREAK]

On what a real Chihuahua would say about Lopez’s performance:
“I have three Chihuahuas, and if they could speak and understand that I play a Chihuahua in the movie, they’d say, ‘That’s bullsh*t. That dude should be the LAST dude to play a Chihuahua. That guy who follows us around, won’t allow us on the bed, throws us out? That guy does not deserve to be one of us.’” [PAGEBREAK]

On Chihuahua’s Mexican background:
“It’s interesting Chihuahuas have a Mexican heritage because they really ARE Mexican. We’re little but we think we’re bigger than everybody. We think we can take everybody on. And that’s without alcohol. You add alcohol and it’s just gets worse.” [PAGEBREAK]

On sacred Chihuahua temples in the Mexican desert:
“With enough Mescal, there [might be some]. There probably is that kind of temple, yes, especially since there is such a deep, deep history in Mexico. It’s just not just great bars and wet T-shirt contests.” [PAGEBREAK]

On the power of love:
“All you have to do is watch the commercials for Match.com and eHarmony.com, where you take people who can’t find each other, who both lie on a profile, and end of getting married. That’s fantastic! What dude likes to dance? I don’t know who’s going to put that down. ‘I love just walking and holding hands and candles…’ What guy is going to put that down? A guy who’s desperate on eHarmony.”
