January Jones Joins The Placenta Eating Trend

ALTJanuary Jones has a secret that she would like to share with other new moms who are looking for a way to re-energize. The 34-year-old Mad Men star suggests placenta encapsulation. Yes, that means turning your placenta into a pill and eating it.

Jones does it because she believes that it gives her energy. “I have a great doula who makes sure I’m eating well, with vitamins and teas, and with placenta capsulation,” she admits to People magazine.

The actress has been taking the placenta pills since she gave birth her son Xander in September. Apparently it helps her feel refreshed, and she’ll take one whenever she feels down. “Your placenta gets dehydrated and made into vitamins,” Jones explains. “It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas.”

While this idea may sound totally crazy, it’s actually a practice that is growing around the country. According to New York magazine, people believe that eating the placenta reduces postpartum depression and helps replenish vitamins that were lost during the pregnancy. So, moms around America are starting to take home their placentas from the hospital along with their newborns

“It’s not witch-crafty or anything!” says Jones. “I suggest it to all moms!”
