Biography

Penélope Cruz burst onto the scene in her native Spain in the early 1990s and quickly established herself as a talent to be reckoned with. A longtime critical darling on the international film circuit, Cruz was a favorite creative muse of famed Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar, who cast the actress in some of his most acclaimed features, including "Live Flesh" (1997) and "All About My Mother" (1999). But it was after she crossed the Atlantic that Cruz truly became a global superstar, thanks to performances in "All the Pretty Horses" (2000), "Blow" (2001) and "Vanilla Sky" (2001), a remake of an earlier film of hers, "Open Your Eyes" (1998). Meanwhile, her highly-publicized off-screen dalliances with some of Hollywood's elite stars like Matt Damon, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Cruise and Javier Bardem only added to her mystique. While she earned her a place among People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" list in the mid-2000s, as well cultivated her fashionista reputation each time she hit the red carpet in an impeccable gown, Cruz was first and foremost a gifted performer. After garnering her first widespread acclaim for Almodóvar's "Volver" (2006), Cruz won an Academy Award for her comic performance in Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" (2008), making her perhaps the most famous actress to make the successful crossover from her native country.

Bonus Trivia

.

Cruz spent one week as a volunteer at Mother Theresa's children's sanctuary in Calcutta and later donated her salary from "The Hi-Lo Country" (1998) to the organization.

.

"A tape appeared on my desk. I went and looked at it, and there was Venus. She's absolutely gorgeous. And very, very good, too." – Stephen Frears on casting Cruz in "The Hi-Lo Country" (1998) to The New York Times, Nov. 29, 1998

.

"I think it is a privilege. Not everybody can do what they want to do and still eat. I'm very lucky. And it's getting better and better." – Cruz on working as an actress, to Vanity Fair magazine, November 1998

.

"She was exactly what I had envisioned for the part. There are very few actresses like her, she was head and shoulders above everybody else." – Billy Bob Thornton on casting Cruz in "All the Pretty Horses" (2000), The Los Angeles Times, June 6, 1999

.

"I don't think you have to be suffering to give a good performance. I feel everything a lot, but I don't feel that that has to be my downfall. I reached a point once when I was so exhausted that I couldn't live like that any more. I wasn't doing anything bad to myself, only overworking, but that can take you to a place that is not good. Work can be your best friend or your worst enemy." – Cruz quoted in London's The Sunday Times Jan. 6, 2002

.

"There's no point in thinking about the past. I feel I can go anywhere and do anything. I'm now enjoying life as never before." – Cruz on her split from boyfriend Tom Cruise in Us Weekly, April 19, 2004

.

"It's as if she has a bank of painful emotions that never dries up," he says. "She has a relationship with pain that is very intimate. She can call on it instantly, effortlessly. Technically speaking, I don't know how she does it." – "Volver" director Pedro Almodóvar on Cruz, to The Los Angeles Times, Oct. 29, 2006

.

Cruz on still finding herself intimidated by Almodóvar, her director on several movies including "Volver" (2006): "I don't want to stop feeling that way," she adds. "Because we are very good friends and we should never cross the line on the set, between takes or gossiping, that's not the way I work and that's not the way he works. So we don't mix on the set, we don't have lunch together. But all the trust and all the years of friendship are there. I just have to look in his eyes and know that he's gonna be there for me and he's knows I'm there for him also, 100 percent." – from CNN.com, Nov. 17, 2006

.

In May 2007, it was announced that Penelope and her sister Mónica would be designing a 25-piece collection for the Barcelona-based fashion chain Mango.
