For more than a year we’ve been hearing about Taylor Swift‘s celebrity power squad. Their red carpet appearances, sleepovers, and award show hangs look like the stuff #lifegoals are made of. However, if you take a closer look it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be. Here are 10 reasons Taylor Swift’s squad culture falls short of being truly awesome.
1. Her squad is full of nothing but stunning (mostly white) actresses and models.
Giphy
This sets an unrealistic standard of beauty for those who look up to her, especially girls of color.
2. With that amount of star power, they’ve done nothing with their popularity to bring awareness to those in need.
Giphy
They have also ignored important societal issues.
3. Swift’s squad encourages the idea of cliques.
Giphy
This gives the impression that exclusion of others is ok.
4. Using the squad for her “Bad Blood” video was basically a passive aggressive bully blow at Katy Perry, whom the song is about.
Giphy
Remember last year when TSwift accused Nicki Minaj of not supporting women? Hypocrical perhaps?
5. It’s ruined the word “squad” for everyone who doesn’t subscribe to Taylor’s definition of it.
Giphy
Rumor is that Rihanna declined her #squad invite.
6. The over exposure made the idea of having a “squad” go from cute, to annoying and overplayed.
Giphy
7. The only time the squad hangs out is at a glitzy award show, or at Taylor’s house.
Giphy
8. A squad sleepover will get more media attention than a charitable act by a cool non-squad celebrity.
Giphy
What happened to doing something adventurous and inspiring for fans? Are they even really friends?!
9. It’s carried on for far too long.
Giphy
10. It often feels like Mean Girls on a larger scale.
Giphy
It’s over. It’s done.
