Robin Hood on target at U.K. box office

The epic, starring Russell Crowe as the bow and arrow-wielding folk hero, took $8.5 million (£5.7 million) in its first weekend of release in Britain, knocking Man 2 into second place.

Horror remake A Nightmare on Elm Street remains in third, with weekend takings of $975,000 (£650,000), while Hot Tub Time Machine stays in fourth, with $860,000 (£573,000). Furry Vengeance rounds out the top five, after slipping three places from number two, with weekend takings of $825,000 (£550,000).

And there was good news for British satirist Chris Morris – his controversial new comedy Four Lions, which tells the fictional story of a gang of bungling suicide bombers, has proved so popular, cinema bosses have now doubled the number of movie theatres showing it. Relatives of victims of the 7/7 terrorist attacks on London had called for the movie to be banned.
