The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are back with an intentionally provocative new video for their song “Sacrilege.” In it, a woman played by model Lily Cole is burned at the stake, along with her murdered lover, by an angry mob. Through flashbacks, we learn that she had been sleeping with several men in town and one woman, all of whom set about dragging her and her final partner, a priest, out of bed so they can kill him and watch her burn.
As time rewinds, we learn at the end of the video that the woman had been married in a traditional white dress, veil, and church ceremony attended by all the same folks — a perfect mirror image of her death. It’s a strong, violent statement about how we like our women, and how we punish them for transgressing against that standard.
