Nintendo’s Launching The First Ever Official Mario Mobile Game In December

The nostalgia factor worked out pretty well for Pokemon Go, so it’s unsurprising that Nintendo would want to give another one of their games the mobile treatment — especially one they owned all of the rights to.

Super Mario Run, which was announced in September, is the first official Mario mobile game. Up until now, we didn’t know much other than that it was coming to iOS, but on Tuesday, the company released a brand new trailer and some extra details.

Super Mario Run looks just like our favorite, classic Mario game Super Mario World, but the graphics much more closely resemble that of Super Mario Bros. Wii (which we’re still hoping comes to iOS, if you’re reading this, Nintendo). The main difference between Super Mario Run and any of the other classic Mario games is that there’s no need for directional buttons. Mario runs on his own, which could actually be quite challenging because you’ve got to time your moves carefully and can’t really think too much about strategy. Perhaps Nintendo was a bit inspired by the popularity of Flappy Bird?

The game does come at a hefty price tag for a mobile app. It’s $9.99 with additional in-game purchases, though there are certain modes you can play for free. We’re guessing the full game is totally worth it because it seems like Nintendo is treating Super Mario Run much more like a console game than a mobile app.

Super Mario Run comes out December 15th. You can check out the trailer for the game above.
