BAFTA Games Awards: Everything You Need to Know

With the Oscars come and gone, Award Season is in full swing, and next up is the British Academy Games awards. Here’s everything you need to know for the awards show premiering March 30th.

What is the BAFTA Games Awards?

Are games art? The British Academy sure thinks so, and is awarding nominees this Thursday, March 30th. You might be more familiar with BAFTA from the British Academy Film Awards Ceremony that took place February of this year.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is a prestigious independent arts charity. Their stated goal is supporting and promoting the next generation of talent. So, every year various visual mediums receive awards for excellence in their craft, from film to television, to games.

In 2004, the British Academy expanded their awards cycle and launched the Games Awards to honor outstanding creative achievement in the games industry. Since then, eighteen ceremonies have taken place. The upcoming 19th ceremony is set to take place on 30th March 2023.

How To Watch the BAFTA Game Awards

The awards take place on Thursday 30 March 2023 live on BAFTA’s Twitch from 6:50 BST/8:50 PST. Frankie Ward will host the show at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. Also, Julia Hardy and Inel Tomlinson will be hosting the livestream.

‘God of War: Ragnarök’ and ‘Stray’ Lead the Pack with Nominations 

The nominations for the upcoming show highlight a broad range of games, from the biggest studios to small independent development teams.

With the wide range of games being highlighted this year, two games have been sweeping multiple categories. This year, God of War: Ragnarök has received 14 nominations in categories such as Game Design and Animation. Stray has been nominated for 8 categories including Debut Game and Technical Achievement.

Other BAFTA Games Awards Nomination Highlights

It’s not just big sprawling 3D RPGs that are receiving the love this year. Cult of the Lambs has received nominations such as Best Game, Best Independent Game, and Game Design. The Board also nominated the top-down sci-fi darling Citizen Sleeper for Narrative, Games Beyond Entertainment, and Original Property.

Other Nominations include:

Seven nominations for Elden Ring
Five nominations each for A Plague Tale: Requiem, Horizon Forbidden West, Immortality, Tunic and Vampire Survivors
Four nominations for Citizen Sleeper
