Amber Rose used her 2018 Mtv Video Music Awards outfit to protest “derogatory labels”.
The model and activist stepped out at the music ceremony held at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Monday night (20Aug18) in a dominatrix-inspired ensemble including red latex corset, face mask, fishnet tights and thigh-high boots.
Speaking to People reporters on the red carpet, Amber explained that her cone-shaped bra was a tribute to Madonna’s iconic Blonde Ambition tour costume, while the rest of her “intergalactic space s**t” look was put together with the intention of opposing stereotypes.
“Regardless of how you dress, that doesn’t make you a s**t, it doesn’t make you a w**re,” she explained. “Those are all just derogatory labels that men and women use against other women to put us down for being confident in our sexuality without even knowing our past sexual history.”
In a video uploaded to Instagram shortly before Amber arrived at the star-studded bash, she also shared that she wanted her outfit to help raise awareness for her upcoming SlutWalk event. The fourth annual protest, in which activists call for an end to rape culture, victim blaming and shaming of sexual assault victims, is due to take place in Pershing Square, Los Angeles on 6 October.
“Hey guys, it’s your girl Amber Rose, and I’m just here sitting on this soft bed, thinking about my SlutWalk this year,” the 34-year-old commented. “I want you ladies to come out and protest against rape culture, sexual violence, slut-shaming, victim-blaming and double standards. I want all the misogynistic men to be so f**king mad this year that we’re not only confident in our bodies, but we’re confident in our sexuality as well. Be mad, ooh, be extra mad.”
Amber previously made a sartorial statement at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2014 when she turned up in a body-baring Laurel DeWitt silver chain-link dress.
