Buzz Aldrin evacuated from South Pole after falling ill

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin has been evacuated from the South Pole after falling ill.
The 86-year-old, who in 1969 became the second man to walk on the moon, was visiting Antarctica as a tourist, travelling with luxury touring company White Desert.
A statement posted on the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) website described the space explorer’s condition as “stable”.
“A White Desert client, Buzz Aldrin, has been evacuated from South Pole,” the statement read. “Mr Aldrin was visiting the Pole as part of a tourist group and while there his condition deteriorated.”
Aldrin was put on a plane bound for the Antarctic research station at McMurdo Sound, on which he was placed under the care of a U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP) doctor.
IAATO officials have been in contact with Aldrin’s family and promise to update the public when more information about his condition becomes available.
