Casey Affleck: ‘Donald Trump’s policies will not last’

Casey Affleck slammed President Donald Trump and his administration as abhorrent and un-American.
The 41-year-old used his acceptance speech after winning for his role in Manchester by the Sea at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (25Feb17) to blast the current White House administration.
Casey touched upon the recent controversial executive orders signed by Trump, including the Muslim travel ban and rolling back the rights of the transgender community.
“Now I’m going to do something that I know I shouldn’t do. I should just whisper it to myself in the bathroom. And I have whispered it to myself in the bathroom. But, I feel like my kids increasingly don’t listen to me unless they see it on TV.
“So, I just want to say, the policies of this administration are abhorrent and they will not last. You don’t have to clap out of obligation,” Casey told the crowd, as they whooped and cheered in agreement.
“They’re really un-American,” he said, as he went on to explain how he had read a piece written by O.J.: Made in America director Ezra Edelman’s mother, activist Marian Wright Edelman.
“I was reading something Ezra’s mom wrote this week, who called this a time to struggle for the future of the soul of our nation. I know this feels preachy and boring and I’m preaching to the choir but I’m just lending my little voice to the chorus here,” Casey added.
“And saying that all of you, (if) you are struggling, you’re doing it so, so well and speaking up and I’m really proud to be a part of this community for that reason. And, because you give me trophies and cast me in movies.”
Casey, who plays a grieving man returning to his hometown to care for his nephew in Manchester by the Sea, was praised on social media for attending the awards ceremony in a white shirt that had the word ‘Love’ in Arabic emblazoned in black.
