Chris Evans relied on mum’s advice after salary backlash

Chris Evans turned to his mother for advice after receiving backlash over being the highest paid star at the Bbc.
The former Top Gear host and Radio 2 presenter topped the list with his earnings from the broadcaster, raking in around $2.8 million (£2.2 million).
People were quick to question this amount, with many wondering why it was so high, and to help him cope with the criticism Chris relied on the wise words from his elderly mum Minni, 91.
Explaining she was watching Columbo on TV at the time of their call, joking “as she often is,” the red-headed star said on his breakfast show on Thursday morning (20Jul17), “She said: ‘Tell them that your mum, who’s a nurse for most of her life, always told you after your dad died to try to find a job you loved, just like I love nursing, and earn what you can, when you can, while you can – which you did almost straight away from when you were a paper boy earning £1.50 a week for freezing your bits off and falling off your bike every two minutes, right through until what you’re doing now.
“‘And tell them – if your bosses don’t think you’re worth it one day, they’ll sort that out soon enough.’”
He concluded by insisting he’s sticking with what his mother said, thanking her for her counsel and that noting he’ll both live and die by her word.
The BBC has been faced with backlash too over the gap between men and women’s pay, as only a third of its 96 top earners were female, and the lack of diversity as only 10 of the highest paid were from black and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds.
“It is very important that the lid has been lifted on this pay discrimination in the BBC,” Labour MP Harriet Harman told BBC News of the numbers.
“Although everybody will think it is very unfair and outrageous, this is a moment when it can be sorted out. The BBC needs to set an example. This is public money and people don’t want their money to be spent unfairly.”
