Dogs handed accolade at Cannes

The unofficial Palm Dog prize was awarded on Friday (25May12) to Smurf and Ged, the two terriers featured in British comedy Sightseers.

The triumphant duo steamed ahead of Billy Bob, the hound which played the companion of an ageing punk rocker in French film Le Grand Soir.

Animals who failed to gain recognition include those featured in films Moonrise Kingdom and The Hunt.

Organiser Toby Rose told the Associated Press the stiff competition reflected the “high canine quotient” at Cannes.

The trophy, now in its 12th year, was last year (11) won by Uggie from The Artist.
