Drake attacked for mocking Kid Cudi’s mental health struggle

Drake has come under fire from music fans online after appearing to mock rival rapper Kid Cudi’s struggle with depression in a new song.
The Hotline Bling hitmaker shared four new tracks on his Apple Music OVO Sound Radio show on Sunday (23Oct16), on the eve of his 30th birthday, but it was a verse on Two Birds, One Stone which caught the attention of the masses, as he blasted both Pusha T and Cudi for taking shots at him in recent weeks.
In his lyrical jab at Cudi, who recently checked into rehab for severe depression and suicidal tendencies, Drake spits, “You were the man on the moon/Now you just go through your phases/Life of the angry and famous”.
In another line, the Canadian refers to anxiety medication Xanax as he adds, “You stay xanned and perked up/So when reality set in you don’t gotta face it.”
It’s not clear when Drake recorded his rap attack, but Cudi announced he was seeking help at an in-patient facility at the start of the month (Oct16), when he shared a candid message with fans online, admitting he wasn’t “at peace”.
Cudi was widely praised by fans and peers alike for going public with his mental health struggles, so many were not happy when they heard Drake’s Two Birds, One Stone criticism, and took to social media to make their feelings known.
One Twitter user wrote, “Depression isn’t a ‘phase’ but thanks to (sic) adding to the terrible misconceptions of mental illness @Drake”, while another posted, “Drake just reinforced the black stigma that mental illness is a weakness, a flaw and not the disease it is. Get well Kid Cudi”.
Another unimpressed fan declared: “Drake dissing Kid Cudi’s mental illness in his new song has really made me lose a lot of respect for him. That’s never a topic to play with.”
Drake, whose latest songs will feature on a new project titled More Life, has yet to comment on the backlash.
Kid Cudi took to Twitter last month (Sep16) to poke fun at “fake” rappers who make “corny s**t” and “wont be lasting too much longer”, later making it clear he was referring to his former mentor Kanye West and Drake.
