Filmmaker Rachel Morrison, who made history by becoming the first female cinematographer to be nominated for an Oscar earlier this year, is in talks to make her directorial debut with a new script written by Barry Jenkins.
Morrison is in negotiations to direct Flint Strong for Universal Pictures.
Oscar winner Jenkins’ script is based on the 2015 boxing documentary T-Rex.
Morrison was among the cinematographers nominated for a 2019 Academy Award for her work on Mudbound.
T-Rex follows the fortunes of teenage fighter Claressa Shields, a Flint, Michigan native who became the first American woman to win a gold medal in boxing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Shields won a second gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
