Jeff Goldblum’s son isn’t keen on his upbeat jazz numbers

Jeff Goldblum’s three-year-old son doesn’t like it when he plays upbeat jazz songs.
The 65-year-old actor has embarked on a second career as a jazz musician, and releases his debut album, The Capitol Studios Sessions, next month (Nov18).
However, not all of his tunes have gone down well with his eldest child Charlie Ocean.
“The three-year-old doesn’t make requests – except that I stop playing,” Jeff told British newspaper The Times. “(He says), ‘It’s too loud, Dad, don’t play.'”
The star, who also has 18-month-old son River Joe with wife Emilie Livingston, has found that his offspring prefers sad songs to upbeat jazz – with American Idol alumni Haley Reinhart’s cover version of Steve Winwood’s Can’t Find My Way Home a particular favourite.
“On one occasion I put Charlie Ocean on my lap and I said, ‘Here, listen to this,’ and for some reason during that rendition I started to cry,” he explained. “I was very moved by it. He said, ‘Dada, what’s wrong?’ I said, ‘It’s such a sad song. It’s beautifully sad.’ And from then on, he’s said, ‘Let’s play a sad song.’ I don’t know why, maybe he wants to see me cry, in a state of tearfulness and openness.”
Despite his son’s wariness of jazz, he and 35-year-old Emilie, who competed in the Olympics in rhythmic gymnastics, often duet together – and he even performed a segment of Johnny Mandel’s 1964 ballad Emily to her at their wedding in 2014.
Gushing over his wife’s singing ability, Jeff added: “She’s a genius. She’s a world-class athlete and all that, but she also has a good voice and I love to hear her sing. She doesn’t consider herself a singer, but she has a very powerful set of pipes.”
The Capitol Studios Sessions is out on 9 November.
