Katherine Heigl paid tribute to her “sassy, fiery” daughter Adalaide on her fifth birthday on Monday (03Ap17).

The Knocked Up star and her husband Josh Kelley adopted Adalaide in April 2012, and are also parents to daughter Naleigh, who they adopted from South Korea in 2009. Their family was extended once again when Katherine gave birth to the couple’s first biological child, son Joshua, in December (16).

Monday saw her youngest daughter turn five, with Katherine sharing a sweet selfie alongside her little girl on Instagram.

She wrote next to the picture: “It is my sassy, fiery, break dancing, bug loving, whip smart, fiercely loyal, daddy’s girls’ birthday! I am so incredibly grateful for the light, the love, the laughter, the purpose, the joy and the grace you have brought to my life! Thank God the world has a girl like you to show us how it’s done!”

The birthday message for Adalaide comes just weeks after Katherine remembered the day she and Josh bought the tot home in a touching post on her blog Those Heavenly Days.

In the post, Katherine reminisced: “Adalaide was just a 4 pound, 11 ounce newborn who we woke up every five seconds to check on when we first brought her home. We were so terrified of how small and new she was. Truly petrified that every pause in her tiny snuffles and grunts meant that she was not breathing.”

But Katherine needn’t have worried as Adalaide is now a fun and healthy five-year-old, and part of the actress’ loving family. She admitted previously that she was unsure whether she would be able to fall pregnant naturally considering her “advanced maternal years”, but was pleasantly surprised when she conceived quickly and relatively easily.

“I’ve known for a while that we wanted to add to our family and frankly didn’t really care how we chose to do that,” she wrote on her blog. “We were considering adoption again, fostering, or pregnancy if possible. Seeing as I have never been pregnant and as my OB/GYN reminded me last year, I’m of advanced maternal age, I wasn’t sure pregnancy was even in the cards for us. Turns out it was very much in the cards!”
