Priyanka Chopra demands education for refugees after Jordan visit

Actress Priyanka Chopra has urged world leaders to fund education for child refugees after visiting displaced Syrian youngsters in Jordan.
The Quantico star, 35, visited a centre for child refugees in the Jordanian capital Amman on Sunday (10Sep17) in her role as an ambassador for UNICEF, the United Nations’ children’s charity.
After meeting kids engaging in educational activities the actress spoke out about the need to allow young refugees to continue their studies and urged individuals and governments to step up their efforts to help the five million Syrians forced to flee their homeland due to civil war.
“We need to take it into our own hands because this is our world and we only have one of it,” she told the Associated Press (AP). “I think the world needs to understand that this is not just a Syrian refugee crisis, it’s a humanitarian crisis.”
She explained her fear that if kids did not have the opportunity to continue their schooling, they could turn to religious or political fanaticism.
The star added, “This can be an entire generation of kids that could turn to extremism because they have not gotten an education.”
In another interview with Entertainment Tonight, Priyanka praised another actress who works with the UN, Meghan Markle, who works with the organisation as an advocate for women.
The former Miss World said more attention should be paid to the Suits star’s acting career and activism and acting career rather than her relationship with British royal Prince Harry.
“I don’t know if I will get into trouble for this, but I have an opinion. I mean, she’s on the cover of Vanity Fair,” Priyanka said. “It would have been nice to write about her not just her boyfriend. I’m just saying. I mean, she’s an actor, she’s an activist, she’s a philanthropist. I mean, she does so much more.”
Calling the media focus on her royal romance “a little sexist”, she added, “The only thing I’m saying is that there needs to be a certain sense of equality where a woman is not just a plus one, you know.”
