Kevin Gates cancels Voodoo Fest performance following jail sentence

Rapper Kevin Gates has cancelled his performance at the 2016 Voodoo Fest in Louisiana due to his “unforeseen incarceration”.
Earlier this week (begs24Oct16), the 30-year-old Paper Chasers star, real name Kevin Gilyard, was sentenced to 180 days in jail on a battery charge for kicking a female fan during a 2015 performance.
Gilyard was scheduled to perform at the music festival in New Orleans on Friday (28Oct16), but a spokesperson has taken to Twitter to reveal his slot has since been cancelled. It is unclear if he will be replaced.
The rapper had also been slated to perform at the local House of Blues following the festival, but it is unclear if that show will still go on, according to Billboard.com.
Gilyard was onstage at Rumor’s Nite Club in Lakeland, Florida last year (15) when audience member Miranda Dixon reportedly tugged at his shorts mid-performance. In video footage of the incident, Gates appeared to strike the woman in her abdomen with his foot, and police subsequently filed a criminal complaint against him.
On Wednesday (26Oct16), a jury of six women took just two hours of deliberation before finding Gates guilty of battery and he was sentenced to 180 days in a Polk County jail and one year of probation.
His lawyer Jose Baez had previously asked for the case to be dismissed under Florida’s Stand your Ground Law, which allows an individual to defend themselves if threatened.
