Marc Anthony tears up paying tribute to Juan Gabriel

Marc Anthony fought back tears as he honoured Mexican superstar Juan Gabriel onstage in New York on Sunday night (28Aug16), hours after the singer’s death.
The veteran crooner passed away from a suspected heart attack in Santa Monica, California on Sunday morning, while preparing for the next date on his massive MeXXico Es Todo Tour, which was set to make a stop in El Paso, Texas that evening.
Marc paid tribute to the Latin music icon on social media after the news of his death broke online, revealing Gabriel had been a huge inspiration throughout his career.
Alongside an image of the pair on the set of the music video for their 2015 collaboration, Yo Te Recuerdo, he wrote, “Today the world of Latin music has lost a giant, an icon and a legend that marked my life forever.”
He went on to hail Gabriel as one of his heroes, adding, “A greater life than life itself leaves today, but your music and your legacy will be with us forever. Rest in peace my light. @soyjuangabriel”.
Anthony took the stage at the Big Apple’s Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night, when he honoured his friend’s memory with a performance of the 66-year-old singer’s Abrazame muy fuerte (Hold Me Strong), but he struggled to control his emotions as he recalled the first time he saw Gabriel in concert at Radio City – the same stage on which Marc was standing.
The salsa singer also dedicated the show, his third consecutive night at the fabled venue, to the late musician.
Meanwhile, flowers were placed on Gabriel’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday morning (29Aug16). The singer was honoured with the plaque on 10 May, 2002.
