Melissa McCarthy to play forger Lee Israel in new movie

Melissa McCarthy has been cast as real-life forger Lee Israel in new biopic Can You Ever Forgive Me?
The movie will be based on Lee’s 2008 memoir and will centre on the woman who forged famous people’s letters to make a living. She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transport stolen property and served six months under house arrest in 1993.
Julianne Moore was originally attached to star in the film, but exited the project last year (15) due to creative differences.
Screenwriter Nicole Holofcener originally signed on to direct the project, but Diary of a Teenage Girl’s Marielle Heller will now take charge of the project. Filming will begin next year (16).
Lee died in 2014.
