Nelly Furtado’s classmates in a recent playwriting course had no idea of her pop star status until she shared her real identity on the last day of school.

The Maneater hitmaker took an extended hiatus from her music career after the release of her 2012 album The Spirit Indestructible, and during her break, she enrolled in a variety of creative classes at her local university.

However, Nelly made sure to use her middle name during the learning sessions so she could blend in with other students and not receive any special treatment.

“In my playwriting class I didn’t wanna be recognized or anything, I just wanted to be low key and be like everybody else,” she explained on The Chew.

“I said my name was Kim, which is my middle name, and they were people in my class, basically everybody, who didn’t know anything about my career until the very last day. There was a little party (where I came clean), and so then it was like, ‘Oh great, wow!’ But it was great because I was just the same (as everyone else). We were critiquing each other’s plays and hurting each other’s feelings, it was good!”

Nelly previously revealed she also took part in ceramics classes, and spent time working at her daughter’s school library and at a friend’s record store to get back to basics before she could find the inspiration to write again.

She has since returned to the music scene and is currently preparing for the release of her new album, The Ride, which hits retailers this week (31Mar17).
