Oscar Nominee Sally Hawkins Battling Lupus

The Shape Of Water star Sally Hawkins is battling autoimmune disease lupus.

Sally, 41, whose performance in Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy drama has earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, has revealed she is fighting the disease, which causes chronic fatigue, in an interview with The Daily Mail newspaper.

“I have lupus, the chronic fatigue syndrome,” she said. “I do get quite tired, but I don’t let it stop me. I’ve been very lucky with it, for the most part. It comes in waves. I’m not crippled with it, like some people. I just have to be aware and take it steady.”

The actress explained that she was selective about what projects she chooses to take on and that she only agreed to star in roles she was “drawn to”.

She explained, “You just make sure you’re with the right people, and you tap into your own needs, and try not to be overwhelmed – which is easier to say than do.”

Other stars who have battled lupus, which occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, include Selena Gomez, Nick Cannon, Lady Gaga and Toni Braxton.
