Pearl Mackie wants to make history by becoming the first female James Bond.

The 29-year-old actress is best known for playing Bill Potts in BBC sci-fi show Doctor Who, but is rumored to be getting the axe from the program after just one series following Peter Capaldi’s announcement he’s hanging up his sonic screwdriver.

Now, Pearl has launched a bid to land one of the most coveted roles in cinema – and wants to break all the rules while doing so.

Following rumors that Daniel Craig is stepping down from the role of 007, a host of stars have revealed their interest in taking on the part, with Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston among the favorites to be named the next Bond.

And Pearl is the latest actress to throw her name in the ring, telling radiotimes.com: “I’d quite like to play James Bond. I just thought of that earlier.”

But asked if she’d want to play “Jane” Bond rather than James, Pearl replied: “Nah nah, James. If I can be called Bill, I can be called James!”

Prior to being cast in Doctor Who, Pearl was known for her work on the stage, having starred in plays such as The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and The Crucible.

But now she has become more of a household name, Pearl is hoping to find success on the big screen, as well as returning to the West End.

“I think that some of the best things that are out there haven’t been written yet. So I wouldn’t like to say anything too defining,” she added.

“There’s so many wonderful people out there that I’d like to play, and so many characters that don’t exist yet that I’d like to play. For me it’s just about playing characters with depth that have interesting stories to tell, that maybe approach things in a way that you haven’t seen before.”
