Rapper Da Brat won’t face jail time over assault lawsuit

Rapper Da Brat has been granted a reprieve in her assault lawsuit after a judge ruled she would not face jail time for failing to pay a judgment.
Shayla Stevens sued the Not Tonight hitmaker, real name Shawntae Harris, in 2014, claiming she suffered permanent facial scarring, neurological impairment and severe mental pain after she was hit with a bottle at an Atlanta, Georgia club.
Da Brat was ordered to pay Stevens, a former cheerleader for American football team the Atlanta Falcons, a total of $6.4 million (£4.9 million) in damages for injuries and loss of earnings.
In December, 2017, Stevens filed legal documents to register the judgment in California, so she could pursue her property and assets in the state. The judgment now reportedly totals $7.8 million (£6 million), because of added interest and non-payment.
According to The Blast, Stevens also asked the judge overseeing the case to hold Harris in contempt of court, resulting in possible jail time, but the lawmaker reportedly ruled she is protected from paying the judgment while she currently going through bankruptcy proceedings, which began in August (18).
