Former Top Gear host Richard Hammond has promised fans he’ll be “back in action soon” after knee surgery following a terrifying car crash in Switzerland.
The Grand Tour presenter was filming a time-trial challenge for the Amazon Prime motoring show in Switzerland on Saturday (10Jun17) when he lost control of the Rimac Concept One electric supercar he was driving, plummeting down a hill and flipping the vehicle, causing it to burst into flames.
He was airlifted to hospital but managed a lucky escape with just a fractured knee.
On Wednesday (14Jun17), Richard took to DriveTribe, the social media website he founded with his The Grand Tour co-presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May, to reassure followers that he’s recovering well after the horror crash.
Sharing pictures of himself on crutches, his stitches and X-rays of the pins he had inserted into his knee, Richard wrote: “I’m pleased to announce that after two sleepless nights and several hours’ surgery, my Swiss Army Knee is finished and works.
“It bends in the middle and whilst a problem at airport security, is at least rustproof. Back in action soon.”
The terrifying smash is not the first time 47-year-old Richard has been seriously injured filming a motoring stunt for a TV show.
In 2006, he suffered life-threatening head injuries following a high-speed crash in a jet-powered car during the filming for the presenting trio’s previous show Top Gear. He was in a coma for two weeks but made a full recovery.
Jeremy, Richard and James co-hosted Top Gear from 2002 to 2015, but left the series after Jeremy was sacked for punching a producer. They launched their new motoring show The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime last year (16).
