Rod Stewart plays final Taj Mahal concert in Atlantic City

Rod Stewart became the last singer to perform at the Taj Mahal Etess Arena in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Saturday night (27Aug16).
He became the last performer to hit the 5,200-capacity venue before a shut down by casino owner Carl Icahn.
Icahn will close the famous venue, which once belonged to Donald Trump, on 10 October (16), and he began cancelling concert bookings at the Etess and Xanadu Theater earlier this summer (16).
Flo Rida, Cedric the Entertainer, and Dane Cook’s shows were all scrapped, leaving Stewart to close the venue.
The British rocker’s finale included a serenade for a 60-year-old fan celebrating her birthday at the gig, and an odd moment when a fan threw a homemade rug on the stage.
Stunned Stewart liked what he saw and used it to sit on for several songs, saying, “This is my rug, no one else can sit on it.”
The singer, who first performed at the Taj Mahal in the early 1990s, made several references to the casino’s closure, at one point joking, “We’re happy to be playing the last concert at this s**thole!”
