Ron Howard wouldn’t let Andy Warhol paint him without a moustache

Filmmaker Ron Howard refused to shave off his once-famous moustache for an Andy Warhol portrait.
The Apollo 13 director grew facial hair after wrapping his role in Happy Days in an attempt to be taken more seriously as a filmmaker – and it became his signature look throughout the 1980s.
“I was trying to look older like I could carry out the responsibility and authority of directing…,” he told U.S. chat show The Talk on Monday (24Apr17).
And he was so attached to his ‘tache, he turned down the chance to pose for iconic artist Andy Warhol – a decision he now regrets.
“I met Warhol a couple times, but never really talked to him and (producing partner) Bryan (Grazer) was meeting with him, and Warhol said, ‘I would like to do a before and after painting of your partner Ron Howard’,” the director recalled. “He said, ‘I would like to paint him with his moustache and then I would like to shave it off…’
“I said, ‘I’m not going to shave my moustache off…’ What an idiot (I was).”
