Sarah Hyland is taking a social media break after being slammed by trolls for crowdfunding for her cousin’s funeral.
The Modern Family star took to Twitter on Sunday (02Nov18) to reveal that her 14-year-old relative, Trevor Canaday, had been killed by a drunk driver the day before. After sharing the tragic news, Sarah shared a GoFundMe page set up to raise money for Trevor’s funeral expenses, and urged her followers to consider donating.
However, many fans were left confused by her request – with several pointing out that Sarah is rumoured to make more than $100,000 for each episode of the hit U.S. TV show.
“You make enough money to cover the expenses I’m just curious why your (sic) asking,” one tweeted, while another added: “I am very sorry for your family but I don’t understand why you are asking people to donate when your net worth is 9 million dollars.
“People my age make less than .01 per cent of that annually and are working two jobs to support their families. Recognize your privilege a little.”
Sarah didn’t take too kindly to the messages though, and returned to Twitter to inform fans that she will be taking some time away from her social media pages.
“I’d like to ask those who have negative thoughts or opinions about the tragedy that happened to my family, to keep them to themselves. You don’t know all the details. And how dare you attack when a beautiful life has been lost,” the 28-year-old wrote, before adding: “You guys finally did it. Your horrible negative ignorant words have broken me. Happy? Staying offline for a while. I have a special announcement and video releasing on Wednesday I believe. So. There’s that.”
In response to Sarah’s tweet, one of her followers replied: “You only have yourself to blame for this backlash, unless there’s some massive detail we’re all missing. Asking complete strangers to contribute to the funeral expenses of your own family member which you could easily pay for yourself is low-class and unconscionable.”
