Shakira honours late author Gabriel Garcia Marquez on death anniversary

Pop superstar Shakira has shared a heartfelt tribute to Colombian literary icon Gabriel Garcia Marquez to mark the fifth anniversary of his death.
The Hips Don’t Lie hitmaker took to Instagram on Wednesday (17Apr19) to share an old photo of herself with her fellow countryman, as she shared some of her memories of the famed One Hundred Years of Solitude writer and journalist.
“Trying to summarize such a big person in a few words like Gabo is a very difficult task but trying to remember someone like him is really very easy,” she began in the lengthy caption, originally written in Spanish.
“We all know, millions of people know, the magic of his books and his stories but few of us have had the good fortune to know the magic he was made of,” Shakira continued. “In this sense, I can consider myself a lucky person… I think I was 21 years old when I met him in his home in Bogota… The truth is that I had no idea why someone like Gabo wanted to write about me since I never thought I was so interesting …”
The singer explained she was the one who became “captivated” during that first meeting, enamoured by his “sense of humour, his warmth, his humanity and his way of speaking, so adorned with mannerisms”.
She also credits Marquez for inspiring her to write two of her “best songs to date”, Hay Amores and La despedida, for the Love in the Time of Cholera film soundtrack, and wraps up her piece by quoting the late writer: “‘Remembering is easy for those who have a good memory and forgetting is difficult for those who have a heart,'” she concluded.
Marquez died at his home in Mexico in 2014, aged 87.
