Stars pay tribute to tragic Cuban baseball star

Marc Anthony and Gloria Estefan have led the tributes to Cuban baseball star Jose Fernandez, who was killed in a boating accident on Sunday (25Sep16).
The 24-year-old Miami Marlins pitcher’s body was found with two friends in an overturned boat off Miami Beach following reports the vessel had a “severe impact” with a jetty and flipped over.
His team’s game on Sunday against the Atlanta Braves was cancelled as news of the tragedy spread and Monday’s (26Sep16) encounter with the New York Mets will serve as a tribute to the sportsman, who began playing baseball in Cuba as a child and defected to America at the age of 15.
Following tributes from the baseball world on Sunday, Jose’s celebrity friends and fans have hit social media to share their thoughts about the tragic young star.
Anthony posted a photo of himself with the baseball player, and added the caption: “It’s a shame to wake up with such sad news. We lost a great human being. Rest in peace, brother.”
Fellow Cuban Estefan posted a shot of the baseball player in his Marlins uniform and added: “He had his whole life ahead of him and was already making an indelible mark on the world & representing his culture in an honorable & uplifting way… RIP Jose & may your spirit live on forever.”
Other tributes have come from JenCarlos, Gente de Zona and Broadway sensation Lyn-Manuel Miranda, who tweeted: “There are lights that go out too soon. We will never forget how they shone.”
