The Cure star Robert Smith: ‘I’m not a goth’

The Cure star Robert Smith has shattered goths’ dreams by insisting he isn’t one.
The Walk singer insists his all black look, smudged lipstick and bird’s nest hair is all for show, and he’s not a sun-shunning, shoe-gazing goth – like many of his fans.
“We got stuck with it (goth) at a certain time when goths first started,” Smith tells Time Out magazine. “I was playing guitar with Siouxsie & the Banshees, so I had to play the part. Goth was like a pantomime to me. I never really took the whole thing seriously…
“It’s just a theatrical thing. It’s part of the ritual of going onstage.
“Also, there is the prosaic reason: I have ill-defined features and naturally pale skin. I mean, not at the moment, because I unfortunately fell asleep in the sun yesterday – very un-goth!”
But he’s very fond of his band’s goth fans, calling them “wonderful people”.
