Tina Fey teaching daughters to ‘fight back’ against misogyny

Tina Fey is raising her two daughters to feel “empowered” and confident.
The American actress and producer is known for her work on NBC sketch series Saturday Night Live and comedy shows 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, all of which have commented on issues of race and gender at different times.
In a new interview conducted by former TV host David Letterman for The Hollywood Reporter, Tina shares she wants her girls, Alice, 11 and Penelope, five, to feel “empowered” even when faced with a world full of what David refers to as “jerky men”.
“I worry, (but) I have confidence that they are both strong enough to fight back, and I think they will feel empowered to call attention to any wrongdoing in their lives,” she said.
David goes on to say that he is happy that he has son Harry, 13, now, even though kids used to “scare him”. To which Tina replied that her daughters bring a lot of fulfilment to her life, even when they tire her out.
“They augment your life and your perspective. And they wear you out. There’s a Stephen Sondheim song, Being Alive. It’s about how people you love just wear you out and irritate you and sit in your chair and make you lose sleep. But it’s what life is,” she explained.
Though Tina is certain her own daughters will be able to support their convictions as they grow older, she’s concerned there has been a “bit of a throwback moment” when it comes to the feminist moment.
She feels anti-women sentiments were triggered during Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump’s campaigns to become the next U.S. president earlier this year (16), and again when Trump came out victorious in the November election.
“I definitely came out of last month feeling misogyny is much more real than two years ago. But the thing I worry about (more) than actual human interaction is the Internet. Because that’s just despicable: people just being able to be awful to each other without having to be in the same room,” said Tina.
“It’s metastasising now, thanks to our glorious President-elect who can’t muster the dignity of a seventh-grader.”
