Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur dead at 69

Afeni Shakur, the mother of slain rapper Tupac Shakur, has died, aged 69.
Officers with Marin County’s Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a possible cardiac arrest at her home in Sausalito, California on Monday night (02May16). Afeni, full name Afeni Shakur Davis, was transferred to a nearby hospital, where she died around 10.28pm local time.
Her death was confirmed by representatives at the Sheriff’s Office in a series of tweets, which read, “Renown rap artist #Tupac Shakur’s mother Afeni Shakur Davis, age 69, died late last night in Marin County… Sheriff’s Coroners Office will lead investigation to determine exact cause & manner of Afeni Shakur’s death.”
Shakur Davis was born Alice Faye Williams. She changed her name when she moved to New York and joined the Black Panther activist movement. She was arrested with other party members in 1969 on charges of conspiracy to bomb city landmarks but she was acquitted in 1971, the year Tupac was born.
Tupac was famously shot in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996. He died in hospital from his injuries days later, aged 25. The late rapper’s estate reportedly rakes in $900,000 (£615,000) a year.
Afeni, who was the executor of his estate, filed for divorce from Gust Davis, her husband of 12 years, earlier this year (16).
Danai Gurira, the actress who plays the samurai wielding zombie slayer Michonne on the AMC series The Walking Dead, has been cast as the activist in the long awaited Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me.
