Tye Sheridan struggled to portray Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse

Tye Sheridan found it really “challenging” to act without the use of his eyes while portraying Cyclops in the new X-Men: Apocalypse movie.
The 19-year-old’s character has to wear a special visor at all times to help him control the powerful beams of energy he shoots from his eyes, and as a result, Tye had to find other ways to show his emotions onscreen as he filmed the new sci-fi epic.
“I think for me, that was one of the most challenging aspects of the role and I kept hearing the note, ‘You just need to act harder,'” he told U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America during a cast interview on Tuesday (24May16).
“It’s me and Brian Smrz, our second unit director, and we’re on set and we’re shooting this big sequence in the third act of the film, and he’s like, ‘I just need to see more, you know, anger in your eyes,'” Tye laughed. “Well, I’m shooting lasers out of my eyes, and so I’m trying to figure out how to use my forehead (to portray that emotion).”
Tye takes over the role of Cyclops from James Marsden, who played the mutant superhero in the first three X-Men films and returned for a brief appearance in 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.
X-Men: Apocalypse is the actor’s first big blockbuster, but he wasn’t the only Hollywood newcomer on set.
His teenage co-star Lana Candor makes her official acting debut as Jubilee in the movie, and she reveals she discovered she had landed the role while she was at school.
“I found out I got cast (sic) in my history class,” she said. “I was super excited and then, of course, I didn’t pass any of my finals! I was out. I was like, ‘I’m done!'”
X-Men: Apocalypse, directed by Bryan Singer, also stars James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Sophie Turner, and Nicholas Hoult.
