Valentino receives American Academy of Achievement Golden Plate Award

Valentino Garavani has been honoured with the American Academy of Achievement Golden Plate Award.
The designer was feted at a celebration in London on Wednesday (18Oct17) at the British capital’s famous Claridge’s Hotel, with Valentino designer Pierpaolo Piccioli, model Eva Herzigova and Vogue international editor Suzy Menkes all in attendance.
“I am extremely flattered and grateful to be awarded this prize,” the 85-year-old said, as he accepted the award. “Those who have received it in the past and in the present, are all extraordinary characters and it is with great joy, respect, and humility that I accept this recognition. In particular, I am really happy and honoured that my work has been recognised and appreciated by an esteemed audience of global leaders.”
Valentino is the first European designer to receive the honour, and only the third Italian to get the award. Previous winners include Barack Obama, Ralph Lauren, and Aretha Franklin.
The award has been presented since 1961 and celebrates exceptional accomplishment in the sciences, the professions, business, industry, arts, literature, sports, entertainment, and public service.
English actor Jeremy Irons, a past recipient of the award, presented Valentino with the honour.
“Congratulations to Valentino Garavani on receiving the esteemed Golden Plate Award, an honour making him the only European fashion designer to receive the prestigious award.
