Victoria Beckham Reflects on ‘Inappropriate’ Spice Girls Outfits

Victoria Beckham has admitted some of her Spice Girls outfits were so “inappropriate” her mother wouldn’t have let her wear them if she had a say in the matter.

The 43-year-old star is known now as a world-famous fashion designer. But before she made the move into the fashion industry, Victoria was a singer – finding fame as one-fifth of the Spice Girls before venturing out as a solo artist. Becoming known as Posh Spice, Victoria was famous for her scanty ensembles and sexy dresses, some of which were so revealing that the star believes her mother Jackie would have forbidden her from wearing them if she wasn’t in the Spice Girls.

Of her teenage dress sense Victoria told Vogue magazine: “Did I have a perm that was slightly distasteful? Yes. Did I wear strange jeans? Yes. Did I look inappropriate ever? Not until the Spice Girls. My mum would never let me go out dressed like that.”

Victoria now rarely looks anything but picture-perfect, and works hard to maintain a glamorous and preened appearance. But another aspect of her Spice Girls days the mother-of-four is less than happy remembering is how much make-up they all used to wear.

“When I was pregnant with Brooklyn, we did a video called Goodbye. I had really short hair. That was quite nice – natural make-up,” she remembered. “But there’s one that was the most hideous – we went to the American Music Awards and we looked like men in drag. We had so much make-up on, it was unbelievable. I look back at the pictures and I’m like, ‘Woah!’ We took the layering of make-up to a whole new level.”

Now Victoria is known around the globe for her stunning designs, which have been worn by stars including Eva Longoria, Blake Lively, Sienna Miller and Claire Danes. And when it comes to her work ethic, Victoria credits her parents, and hopes to pass on a similar outlook to her children with husband David Beckham.

“My family brought me up telling me I could achieve absolutely anything,” she smiled. “Whenever I said I can’t do it, my dad just wouldn’t hear it. He’d say ‘what do you mean you can’t do it? Why? Why?’ And I do that to my own children as well.”
