‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ is a Full-Blown Family Affair

Hey, Hollywooders! What’s Good in the ‘Wood?

I just got back from seeing The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, one of the many new movie releases out now in movie theaters.

I took a look at movie theaters near me to compare movie showtimes and settled on going to the 1:50 pm showtime at the Showcase Cinemas theater near me. Going in the middle of a weekday meant that there was practically no one there. I was one of five people in my huge theater and I didn’t have to wait in line to buy the movie theater popcorn that I was craving.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is the sequel to the 2017 film The Hitman’s Bodyguard. The action-comedy stars Salma Hayek, Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds, Frank Grillo, Morgan Freeman, and Antonio Banderas. The film was directed by Patrick Hughes, who also directed the original movie.

Do you need to see The Hitman’s Bodyguard to enjoy The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard?

While The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is a sequel, you don’t have to see The Hitman’s Bodyguard to enjoy it. The new movie builds upon the story of the first, sometimes referencing things that happened in the 2017 film. However, if you have not seen the original movie you will still understand the story and characters of The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, as it has a standalone plot.

Personally, I found The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard to be much funnier than the original film. Ryan Reynolds’ character Michael Bryce presents himself as a goofy guy who doesn’t know what he’s doing more in this movie, which adds another layer to the film’s comedic plot. This film also benefits greatly from Salma Hayek’s increased screen time, as her hilarious character Sonia Kincaid carries the sequel’s storyline.

Similar to the first film, the antagonist is a power-hungry politician in Europe (Antonio Banderas) who Michael (the bodyguard), Sonia (the wife), and Darius (the hitman, played by Samuel L. Jackson) are enlisted to help take down. The film follows them and their antics throughout Italy as they simultaneously try to conquer their personal challenges.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is the perfect film to kick off your summer movie screenings in a movie theater

I thought that The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard perfectly blended comedy and action. Despite the intense action sequences, it is a feel-good movie filled with hilarious jokes that had me laughing out loud. The film also contains gorgeous backdrops of multiple locations throughout Italy.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard opens up with Michael Bryce taking a sabbatical from his career in bodyguarding. He embarks on a journey of self-discovery, traveling to Italy to relax. Twelve hours into his vacation, he is approached by Sonia, who needs his help trying to save Darius from the Italian mafia. This call for help reunites the hitman with his bodyguard and brings Sonia into the action.

Salma Hayek gave an absolutely fierce performance in the film, carrying the otherwise male-dominated movie. She contributes to the chaos of the film, making it even more captivating.

Samuel L. Jackson is certainly no stranger to crime and action films (Pulp Fiction, the Marvel films), but it is so fun to watch him do comedy and action at the same time. In many of his other roles, such as Nick Fury in the MCU, he plays his character seriously, so seeing him in a comedy like The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard shows off his versatility.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard gave me all of the action I could want from a big blockbuster film while keeping me laughing the entire time, making it a great watch to kick off my summer.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is all about finding family where you least expect it

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard has much more heart in its story than the original film. The Hitman’s Bodyguard teases Darius and Sonia’s relationship and ends with Darius saying that he will lay low until Sonia is out of prison. The sequel opens with the couple on their honeymoon in Italy.

Throughout the film, we see Darius and Sonia’s relationship fully develop, which is something that definitely lacked in the first film. Michael’s relationship with Darius picks up where it left off in The Hitman’s Bodyguard, and we see Michael meet Sonia for the first time and begin to form a friendship.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard gives a deeper look into Michael Bryce’s background, showing the audience how he has gotten to this point in his life. We learn why he’s a bodyguard, what makes him so safety-cautious, and we even meet one of his family members. The movie begins with Michael trying to center himself and find who he is, but he instead learns that all along he needed to find support from others who truly care about him.

By the end of the film, Sonia, Darius, and Michael find family in each other. There is an unexpected twist at the end that bonds the three characters together on an even deeper level.
